A survey completed by data protection company Credant Technologies to gauge the frequency and ease with which mobile devices are lost in transit, have found that approx 60,000 or so mobile devices are left behind in London taxis.
Experts say that criminals would have a field day with such devices as it would hold crucial information about the owner.
Devices such as mobile phones, memory sticks and laptops holding sensitive information such as PINs, passwords and email addresses are left behind, making them targets for ID theft.
Credant Technologies state that if you do travel with information that is sensitive, then consider encryption so no-one can access the data at any point (or at the very least, password protect it – as it could end up in the wrong hands).
With recent high profile data loss scandals such as a laptop being left on a train and computer discs missing in the post, chief security architect Chris Mayers at applications delivery firm Citrix, said businesses needed to think more carefully about what sensitive data employees were carrying around outside the office and what they should be doing to keep it safe.
