In 2007, the EU set in place proposals for mobile phone customers to start benefiting from substantially reduced roaming charges when travelling between EU countries.
The European Union has finally decided to set a cap on roaming SMS charges. The new improved rates will be in place by next summer at a maximum of EUR 0.11. The costs for sending SMS whilst abroad is much higher with the current average roaming SMS cost at EUR 0.29 (23p) and can be as high as 63p.
In an interview with German newspaper Rheinische Post, EU commissioner for telecommunications Viviane Reding, said that the current voice roaming regulation will not end in the summer of 2009, but is to be continued until 2013, with the maximum roaming fees falling by EUR 0.03 per year.
The same proposal by the EU also sets to bill voice calls by the second and to encourage competition for internet (data) roaming charges.
