France, Germany, Italy, and Spain will be getting the BlackBerry App World this month, confirmed RIM’s VP of global alliances Jeff McDowell. Research In Motion now has 2000 applications and will also provide access in countries such as Brazil and India in coming months.

With RIM’s development of the Facebook application for BlackBerry, Facebook has become a lot more appealing. Once the user has logged in, clicking the friends button will take you to a display of all friends who have recently updated their profiles. Like the web version of Facebook, you are presented with the option to see more of your friends, and filter the list in various ways.

However, if users possibly have more than 1200 Facebook friends, then they will have to make do with displaying the last 1200 contacts they interacted with.

To see them all, users will need to browse to the mobile version of Facebook direct from the application’s Option Menu.

Corporate BES

It has now been 2 months since RIM released BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0. Hopefully the 60-day trial will have allowed BESadmins to have experienced the new web based BlackBerry Administration Service, Web Desktop Manager and the BlackBerry Monitoring Service.

If your free trial has come to end, it will be necessary to purchase a production version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.  The production version will come with a new CAL (Client Access License), SRP (Server Routing Protocol) Identifier and SRP Authentication Key. Airtime Manager customers can purchase BES Client Access Licences at cost via their Account Managers.

To upgrade from an evaluation to a production version the production CAL, SRP Identifier and SRP Authentication Key will have to be updated on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

The mobile operator O2 has teamed up with Pearl and Dean to run the ‘Asteroid Storm’ game in 20 Vue cinemas across the UK this summer. Going live on 10 July, Asteroid Storm will be shown in the trailer reels ahead of the 3D versions of Ice Age 3, G-Force and Toy Story.

The game takes place on ‘Starship O2’ which is trapped in an asteroid belt. The audience is told by the captain that the ship has been damaged and that their help is needed to steer the ship back on course. Two infra-red cameras will register when different parts of the audience put their hands up; the movements are interpreted by the game server behind the scenes, so that the virtual craft can be steered safely out of an asteroid belt in 3D real time. The success of the Facebook Application for Blackberry has been enormous. The addictive power of Facebook combined with BlackBerry has made it a duo to be reckoned with. The latest release of Facebook 1.6 for BlackBerry has brought on the ability to synchronise friends profile pictures, names and calendar (birthdays, events, etc) with the BlackBerry smartphone.

If you are using BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 or have imported the IT Policy from KB15535, BESadmins may limit organiser data access. To find out more, click here.
