Apple issued the iPhone 3.1 software update yesterday. Since then, many users have reported that the update has caused handsets to freeze, get stuck in a restore “loop” and wiped of all content.
In one incident a person reports that a phone went from 100 percent to 55 percent charge in the space of six hours, despite being completely inactive and even having Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disabled.
More critical is a problem with syncing Exchange e-mail. Before iPhone OS 3.1 the email accounts synced fine, however some users now receive the message “The account requires encryption which is not supported on this iPhone.” It is believed that the errors stem from server-side encryption options being properly enforced, as a result locking out the 2G and 3G iPhone. The iPhone 3GS has built-in support for processing the encryption, and so should be unaffected.
The important thing to remember when updating is to make sure you’re fully backed up beforehand.
Apple has not commented on the situation, although it is likely that engineers are already working on resolving the problem.
