O2 UK Trials LTE (4G) With Huawei

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has announced a successful live trial of LTE (Long Term Evolution) with Telefónica O2 UK, the first fully operational operator LTE trial in the UK. During the trial, a peak downlink rate of 150Mbps was achieved in the Slough area, the headquarters of O2 in the UK.
A recent showcase also demonstrated real life case studies of future consumer demands on a mobile broadband LTE network, including high definition video streaming, mobile gaming, high speed file transfer and video conferencing. continue

BES 5.0.1 Maintenance Release 1 Supports Exchange 2010

RIM has released BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.1 MR1 which officially adds support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.
From the Release Notes:
• To support Microsoft Exchange 2010, verify that your organization’s environment includes Microsoft Exchange 2010 Update Rollup 1.
• To support Microsoft Exchange 2010, on the computer that hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, install MAPI client and CDO 1.2.1 version 6.5.8146.0 or later.

Desktop Manager for Mac 1.0.2 Update Released

The first update for BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac has been released. BlackBerry Desktop Manager 1.0.2 bundle 08 introduces improvements to device connectivity, synchronization and it includes 6 bug fixes:
Calendar
- BlackBerry Desktop Manager attempted to change entries in Google Calendar using the safer sync option.
Contacts
- If you switched from synchronizing all contacts to selected groups, without selecting any group, contacts were deleted from your device.
- A duplicate entry was created in Microsoft Entourage and the Apple address book after adding a Last Name for the contacts in the device and synchronizing your data.
- Your contact’s PIN number was deleted from the contacts list on your device after changing the contact entry in Entourage.
- The “Display type” field was changed after synchronizing contacts again.
Notes/Memos
- Some note entries were duplicated in Entourage and your device if you were also synchronizing with Apple Mail.

Enable Public Contact Folders Synchronization on BES

One of the anticipated features for BlackBerry was public folder synchronization. With the release of BES 5.0, this has now become possible. Here is RIM’s KB on how to set this up:
Environment
- BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0 for Microsoft Exchange

Overview
Public folder synchronization can be enabled in the BlackBerry Administration Service using the following steps:
- Open the BlackBerry Administration Service.
- Under Servers and Components menu, expand BlackBerry Solution Topology.
- Expand BlackBerry Domain.
- Expand Component View.
- Select Email.
- Click Edit Component.
- In the Published public contact folders section, select the public contact folders to synchronize to the BlackBerry smartphone.
- Click Save All.

Installing Service Packs for BES 4.0 to 4.1

Environment
- BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.0 to 4.1
Overview
This article contains recommendations for installing service packs for BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Each service pack includes the changes and hot fixes in previous service packs. A single upgrade can keep the BlackBerry Enterprise Server current. Use this article in conjunction with BlackBerry Enterprise Server product documentation.
Important: Refer to artricle KB05115 for information on installing or updating BlackBerry Enterprise Server remotely.
Complete the following tasks to install service packs for BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
- Download the latest service pack for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.
- Confirm and back up configuration settings and client access licenses (CALs).
- Back up the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
- Stop BlackBerry Enterprise Server services and record logon account information.<
- Install the service pack.

Contacts Removed After BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.1 Upgrade

Update: RIM have replaced the affected version of Service pack 1 for BES 5.0 with Bundle 70. So if you have the affected version, admins will need to download the 657MB file again. If you have already installed it, the below article may need implementing.
Seems BES 5.0 Service pack 1 has an issue with BlackBerry Contacts. RIM have released a Knowledge base article on how to resolve this:

Update Date and Time on a BlackBerry

Overview
There are two ways to update the date and time on a BlackBerry smartphone.
Using the BlackBerry smartphone
- Navigate to Options > Date/Time.
- Change the Date/Time Source field to one of the following options:
- BlackBerry – Synchronizes the time with the Research In Motion® BlackBerry Infrastructure and not the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
- Network – Synchronizes the time with your service provider’s network time.
- Off – Does not synchronize the date or time.

Credant Technologies Reminds Mobile Users to Secure Data

According to another taxi survey organized by Credant Technologies, Londoners forget on average around 10,000 mobile phones a month in the back of taxis, and more than 1,000 other handheld devices, including iPods, laptops and memory sticks, every month.
The study highlights the fact that if you travel in taxis or other forms of public transport, then you need to encrypt your data so no one can see it. At the very least, you should password protect your data since it could easily fall into the wrong hands. continue
