RIM Acquires Software Developer Viigo
Posted by Comments Off
Research in Motion has recently purchased Viigo, a Toronto-based company that’s been collaborating with the BlackBerry maker for years. Viigo announced the purchase with a small note on their website this week. Viigo aims their software at media companies and smartphone manufacturers.
Viigo delivers news, weather, sports, stocks, and other information in a single, unified RSS-based interface. It’s known for running quickly even on older phones, and features plenty of customization options and the ability to import Google Reader data.
Following the acquisition, Viigo will continue to bring its “expertise in BlackBerry application development and real-time content delivery to the BlackBerry platform.” Moreover, the Viigo app for BlackBerry will still be available, for free, via BlackBerry App World.

Bluetooth 4.0 incorporates low power mode
Posted by Comments Off
Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced Bluetooth 4.0 will be available by the end of this year. The new updated Bluetooth 4.0 will see a low power mode of operation to help reduce battery drain. The current version of Bluetooth used is 2.1 with Bluetooth 3.0 nearing completion. Bluetooth 4.0 devices will also be able to connect to Wi-Fi devices at up to 25 Mbits per second.
Mobile phone, smartphone and wireless headset manufacturers will welcome this news as it provides an opportunity to make these devices even smaller whilst maintaining the required power levels. A Bluetooth 4.0 device can be run from a watch type battery whereas current Bluetooth devices require much larger batteries.
