Smartphones will make up more than half of all mobile phones shipped worldwide by the end of Quarter 1 this year.

Data from the 4th quarter of 2012 shows that smartphones shipments hit a record high of 44% of the overall mobile phone market of 472 million. With smartphone numbers growing by almost 40% year on year every quarter, while shipments of feature phones dropped by around 20% in the same period, this would put smartphones ahead of feature phones shipments (at 286 million vs. 211 million) during the first quarter of 2013.

Nokia has added two new phones to its mobile lineup, bringing social media and instant sharing to more mobile users. The Nokia Asha 205 and 206 were designed by the Finnish company to  provide speedy Internet at affordable prices, as well as integrated social networking. The Asha 205, with a full QWERTY keyboard, is expected to start shipping in the fourth quarter in the US, with a price tag of $62, so expect a price point around the £40 – £50 mark when it hits the UK. Samsung Electronics has become the first smartphone maker to release a device featuring Microsoft’s latest mobile software, beating Nokia to the crunch by a matter of days. The brief announcement on Wednesday at a Berlin electronics show comes amid expectations that smartphone makers may turn increasingly to Windows devices after a US jury decided many of Samsung’s Google Android-based phones infringed Apple patents. The International Data Corporation’s (IDC) today released its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report for Q2 of 2012. The report shows the breakdown of smartphone operating systems (OS) in all handset worldwide shipments over the months April, May and June, covering Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS, Symbian, Windows 7/Windows mobile and Linux.
