Blackberry Link is the new way to transfer all your content from your Blackberry 10 device to your computer. This includes pictures, songs and video. It can also be used to transfer your data from a previous device to your new Blackberry 10.

It has seamless content management built in, allowing you to transfer your data to your device over Wi-Fi or USB. Blackberry Link also offers support for iTunes and Windows Media Player, so photos, video and other media can be synced easily.

Blackberry Link can be used to securely backup and restore your device data. The software can also be used to update your device firmware.

Yesterday, Research In Motion released a new update for its popular messaging app, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) version 7. The update is available to handsets running BlackBerry OS 6 or 7.

Registered BlackBerry Management Center users received emails yesterday from Research In Motion announcing that the service and its support will close on 10th January 2013.

Designed for businesses with three to 100 employees, the BlackBerry Management Center allowed easy set up and troubleshooting of employee email and helped protect lost or stolen smartphones, as well as the ability for wireless backup and restore. Continue reading

Research In Motion made a statement on their Twitter account, acknowledging the outage and confirming all services have been restored.

It appears during routine maintenance, a technical fault occurred which did not allow RIM to turn BlackBerry services back on.

If BESAdmins are detecting a lot of pending mail on the BES and Outlook, it is recommended to advise users to reinsert the SIM and/or switch off the WiFi option on the device. This will allow it to reconnect and refresh the connection to the BlackBerry infrastructure.

BlackBerry users on the Vodafone UK network have been hit with an outage that has affected their data connection. This means that they are unable to send or receive emails, BBM or able to access websites.

At the time of this post, it would appear that services might be slowly coming back online, as users are reporting that some emails are coming through. However there will have been a backlog of pending messages that will have built up, and it could be some time before everything is back up and running normally.

BlackBerry Protect is a service that RIM tightly integrates into BlackBerry 7 handsets. They pushed out a new update for BlackBerry smartphones bringing it to v1.1.1.73. This update brings improvements and fixes including:

  • Support for backing up additional databases like password keeper and Wi-Fi network profiles
  • Improvements to backup and restore feature
  • Enhancements to application deletion protection

RIM lost $125m (£78m) during the fourth quarter, it said in its earnings report on Thursday. Its revenues, which totaled $4.2bn, were down by 19 percent from the previous quarter, and shipments of BlackBerry smartphones fell quarter-on-quarter by 21 percent, to just 11.1 million units.

Although such results have got the industry commenting again on RIM’s end, chief executive Thorsten Heins said RIM will “refocus on the enterprise business and capitalize on our leading position in this segment”. He went on to say “We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody’s darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength.” Continue reading
