The BlackBerry 9900 was first announced back in May 2011. After a week of it being released, here’s our review:

The Handset

An initial impression once I got my hands on it is the build. It is a tiny bit weightier than the BlackBerry 9700 I have been using for the past few months, however the quality of it is sturdy with the smooth fascia surrounded by the brushed metal bevelled edging. The back is a mixture of rubberized plastic topped with a carbon fibre look inlay. The buttons along the edging are metal as well, and you have the screen lock button at the top, volume control buttons on the right hand side (with an extra button between them for pause and play). Below this, you have the one and only side convenience key, default programmed for camera. Unfortunately, it’s placing means that quite often I accidently pressed it and launched the camera. On the other side you have the micro USB port and headphone jack. Also along the bottom you have the contact points for the desktop charger. Continue reading »

BlackBerry® Protect is a free application designed to keep your information secure if your BlackBerry® smartphone goes missing. If you’re on an applicable consumer data plan (enterprise plans are not supported at this time), you can download BlackBerry Protect and then log into the website where you can lock, locate or wipe your smartphone from wherever you are. You can also choose to have your crucial data backed up wirelessly and automatically, as often as you choose (daily, weekly, or monthly).

Research in Motion has just announced BlackBerry Balance. A new enterprise feature which includes a set of ‘Balance’ controls for devices that contain personal and corporate data.

BlackBerry Balance will let BES admins choose to wipe only corporate information from a device or to limit users from cutting work data and pasting it into a personal application or email. The new system will also provide new encryption options for media cards and alerts IT admins when emails or calendar invites are sent outside of your company.

A separate feature, BlackBerry Protect will enable users to remotely wipe a lost or stolen device.

With the introduction of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.2, users will soon be able to use BlackBerry Protect.
