Ofcom has announced a proposal to change the way consumers are charged for calls to Freephone numbers, 08, 09 and 118 numbers, known as non-geographic customer service numbers. These numbers currently charge more if rung from a mobile line, compared to a landline. The variance in the costs to these numbers from different suppliers currently causes confusion to users. Last Tuesday, Ofcom opened up the registration for parties interested in bidding for the 4G licenses next year. Applicants had until 16:00 on 11th December to express their interests as well as submit the initial £100,000 deposit. Continue reading

After publishing a report on the state of the UK’s communications infrastructure, Ofcom have unveiled plans on how it will tackle consumers’ growing demand for data on the move.

According to the report, 20 million Gigabytes of data is now being consumed in a month by mobile phone users. Compared to the same period last year, where 9 million Gigabytes of data was used, this is an increase of more than double the amount, an equivalent of downloading 5 billion music tracks. They predict that this could increase by 80 times that amount buy 2030. Even with the advent of 4G next year, Ofcom forsee an issue of possible “capacity crunch” in the forseable future as networks struggle to meet the data demands of its customers. Continue reading

Earlier this week Ofcom, the communications regulator published the timetable for the sale of the 4G mobile spectrum auction.

This timetable set out the dates of the principal steps that mobile network providers must take in order to be allowed to bid for a portion of the spectrum that was released earlier this year when the TV analogue signal was switched off. Continue reading

Vodafone UK took over the front pages of some of the nation’s newspapers this morning to push the benefits of its upcoming 4G service, ahead of Ofcom’s auction early next year.

The advert cites Vodafone winning Best Network earlier this month at the Mobile Choice Awards as voted by the public, and takes it a step further by declaring “After being voted the best, there is only one way to go. Better.” Continue reading

4G services from major UK operators could be rolling from late summer next year, as watchdog Ofcom has secured the freeing up of the necessary spectrum ahead of time.
