A recent report released by O2 UK shows how mobile phones have now become so much more than just a device to call people. The report, called All About You asked users how much time people spend doing various tasks via their smartphones.
The report also asked respondents what they used their smartphones for. The results reveal how ubiquitous these devices are becoming in everyday life, in places replacing other devices, such as alarm clocks and watches, prompting David Johnson, the General Manager Devices for O2 UK, to say: “Smartphones are now being used like a digital ‘Swiss Army Knife”. For a while, Windows have been doing Battle with Zeus, a Russian malware which has been designed to steal peoples’ banking information, allowing funds to be transferred from their accounts, in some cases to be emptied.
A new version named Zitmo (Zeus In The MObile) has now started attacking Android based smartphones. It poses as a banking activation application that says that it must be installed in order to proceed. Trend Micro have provided news of a ZeuS Trojan virus specifically targeting BlackBerry users.
The ZeuS malware specifically targeting the BlackBerry OS is currently detected by Trend Micro as BBOS_ZITMO.B. Just like its desktop counterpart, this ZeuS variant does not display any graphical user interface (GUI) that can prompt users about the infection. Instead, it removes itself from the list of applications, in order to effectively stay under the radar. Continue reading
An O2 spokesperson has confirmed Apple is set to release a software patch to address the recently described security flaw in the iPhone.
It was revealed that modified SMS messages could result in iPhones being disconnected from the network or hijacked altogether.
O2 said the patch would be available this Saturday through iTunes.
“We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively,” the spokesperson added. “We always recommend our customers update their iPhone with the latest software and this is no different.”
O2 also revealed Windows Mobile and Google Android phones are also vulnerable, but no patch or information has yet been made available from either Operating System providers.
